Marcy

VP, Rigid Paper, NA

Now that I am serving as vice president of Rigid Paper and Closures, NA, I'm enjoying learning a different side of Sonoco's business. My division is the largest producer of composite cans for food (powdered beverages and infant formula, coffee, cereal, snacks, nuts, frozen concentrate, pet foods and spices/seasonings) and non-food  (adhesives, caulks, cleansers, automotive and lawn and garden) products, so I get to interact with some of the most prestigious consumer brands in the world.  And, it's always exciting to see packages we develop for our customers' product on retail shelves or in homes of friends and family!

As division vice president for Sonoco Recycling, I found myself increasingly challenged and rewarded as we assisted manufacturers, retailers and municipalities to redirect their waste materials, creating both sustainable business practices and new streams of revenue. Sonoco Recycling manages a variety of recycling activities – including collection and processing of paper, plastics, metals and other materials, brokering materials to other end users, and export of recovered materials to foreign markets. These activities make Sonoco one of the largest recyclers in North America.

On-the-job

At Sonoco, it's not about being a woman; it's about being an authentic leader. Sonoco encouraged me to use my unique leadership style from day one. My Sonoco colleagues turn to me for my creativity, strategic planning and sales and marketing skills. I thrive in Sonoco's collaborative culture and enjoy helping other Sonoco women reach their highest potential through my active involvement in Sonoco's Diversity Council, where I serve as Chair.

Off-the-job

Most weekends, you can find me either on the shoreline relaxing at our beach house in Surfside Beach, S.C., or on the sideline with my husband watching our daughter play soccer.

Most memorable moments

One of Sonoco Recycling's papermill customers is located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. During my time with Sonoco Recycling, they picked us up in their corporate helicopter for a meeting and on the way to the island, we toured the glaciers. It was an amazing experience I'll never forget. Talk about customer bonding.
