Mary-Beth
Divisional HR manager, Industrial
I joined Sonoco in 2004 as HR manager for one of its service centers. In 2007, I moved into a role as a regional HR manager for the Industrial sector. Prior to joining the Company, I had worked in human resources for a Sonoco joint venture, so I was familiar with Sonoco. Because of all of the good things I knew about Sonoco, I was very excited to join the team.
On-the-job
As a divisional HR manager for the Industrial sector, I have responsibilities in several divisions, including Paper, Industrial Products, Sonoco Recycling and Protective Packaging. The primary objectives of my role are to create and maintain good employee/labor relations and to provide support to management and employees at my assigned plants. I truly enjoy my job and working with so many different people throughout the Company.
Off-the-job
With two small children at home and a career that requires travel, I have had to learn how to balance work and home commitments. I have been lucky to have managers who have always encouraged good work/life balance. I also have tremendous support from my family. I enjoy spending time with my husband and two daughters and we love to get together with our extended family and friends. I also volunteer at my daughter’s school and teach Sunday School.
Most memorable moments
One of my most memorable moments was when I was asked to interview for my current position. I was eight months pregnant and was surprised that I was being considered for a new position when I was about to take maternity leave. When I was offered the promotion, I was worried about the commitment it would take to learn a new role that included travel with a newborn at home. My manager not only believed in my ability to do it, he supported me and helped me be successful. I am so thankful for all of the wonderful opportunities Sonoco has given me.
