One of Sonoco's greatest strengths in its paper business
is its ability to act swiftly almost anywhere in the world.
We operate 21 mills globally and 31 paper machines, giving us a total annual capacity of 1.8 million tons. Our assorted paperboard grades include chipboard, coreboard, containerboard, edgeboard and flatstack. If you have a special need based on strength, caliper or cost, our team can create a custom board that meets your specific requirements.
Sonoco's experience in paper making goes back more than 100 years. Our first mill was established in Hartsville, S.C., around the turn of the century and produced the fiber used by the Company to manufacture paper cones for yarn winding.
Sonoco also is a custom formulator of specialized adhesives, including water-based polymer, PVOH and dextrin. With more than 150 adhesive products to choose from, we serve many different markets, including tubes and cores, case and carton sealing, box manufacturing, bag manufacturing, labeling, laminating and air filtration.
Certifications
Sonoco has acheived chain-of-custody certification to the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) and the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC™) standards. These certifications cover a number of Sonoco recycled paperboard mills and recycled rigid paper container plants in the United States and Canada.
Tube and Core
Sonoco is the leading manufacturer of paperboard designed specifically for tube and core production. For more than 20 years, Sonoco engineers, scientists, technicians and analysts have conducted cutting-edge advanced mechanics research at the University of Wisconsin to engineer and produce paperboard to meet tube and core makers’ unique needs. Our SPC series is designed to meet ZDT and ring crush standards, and we offer a team of experts to help you select the right grades for your applications.
Containerboard
Sonoco manufactures recycled grades of containerboard or linerboard at its paper mill in Trenton, Ontario, Canada. These grades are designed to industry standard mullen and ring crush specifications. Sonoco manufactures corrugating medium at its Hartsville mill, which is ideally located for shipments in the eastern half of the United States as well as exports shipped through local ports.
Tissue and Towel
Sonoco offers corestock for the production of both 1-ply and 2-ply cores for tissues and towels. More than four years of in-depth research and analysis went into the development of our 1-ply cores. Though made with less fiber than traditional 2-ply corestock, our 1-ply cores are strong enough to work on both surface-winding converters and the newer, high-speed winding converters. Our estimates show that customers transitioning to 1-ply cores save 10-20 percent on paper and nearly 80 percent on adhesive.
Edgeboard
Sonoco is a major producer of paper grades designed to produce edge protection products. We produce these grades across our entire mill system, and have the capability to manufacture varying calipers, basis weights, and slit widths.
Flat Stack Recycled Chipboard Sheets
Flat stack recycled chipboard sheets from Sonoco cost-effectively protect products from pallet damage, dust and dirt. Available in a variety of weights and sizes, our flat-stack sheets are made from 100% recycled fiber and are completely recyclable. With mills located throughout North America, we also have the infrastructure in place to get your order to you on time and where you need it.
Specialty
Sonoco's paperboard is used in a variety of end markets including folding cartons, surface protection, filter frames, and miscellaneous converted products. In addition for hospitality applications, our subsidiary, Sonoco Paperboard Specialties, produces paper amenities including StanCap® glass covers and Rixie™ coasters.
