November 2008
- Sonoco Chairman, President and CEO Harris E. DeLoach Jr. was named 2008 Business Leader of the Year by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce.
- Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina, Inc. named Sonoco's Statesville, N.C., point-of-purchase facility its 2008 Contractor of the Year for helping fund Goodwill's workforce development programs by securing new joint business opportunities.
- The Shakespeare Division of Jarden Materials named Sonoco's Molded Plastics business a Platinum Level Supplier for achieving a 97 percent rating in an evaluation of its quality, service and delivery as a supplier.
- The Curel Life's Stages counter display that Sonoco's point-of-purchase display business created and produced for Kao Brands Company received a silver award in the In-Store Marketing Institute's 2008 Design of the Times competition.
- The South Carolina chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators presented the Company with an overall
Award of Excellence and a design Award of Excellence for its 2007 Annual Report.
October 2008
- The innovative reclosable Linearpak® canister Sonoco developed and produces for Target's Archer Farms brand cereal was chosen 2008 Package of the Year in the Food Category by Food and Beverage Packaging magazine.
- Sonoco's Archer Farms Linearpak rigid paperboard package was named one of 13 finalists in Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute's PACK EXPO Selects awards program and will be featured in the Showcase of Packaging Innovations at the Pack Expo trade show in Chicago, Ill., in November.
- The American Heart Association recognized Sonoco for its proactive health and wellness programs for employees by naming the Company a Gold Level Fit-Friendly Company.
- At the Global Lean, Six Sigma and Business Improvement Summit and Awards in Orlando, Fla., Sonoco received the 2008 Award for the Best Project Achievement in Supply Chain Management.
- The League of American Communications Professionals recognized Sonoco's 2007 Annual Report with a Silver Award in its 2008 Spotlight Awards.
September 2008
- Sonoco was named one of 2008's 28 Best Places to Work in South Carolina by SCBiz, the SCJobNetwork.com, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, the Society for Human Resource Management—South Carolina State Council and Best Companies Group. Selection is based largely on survey responses by randomly chosen South Carolina Sonoco employees.
August 2008
- American business Communicators honored Sonoco's 2007 Annual Report by presenting it with an Outstanding Achievement Award.
- Calling Sonoco's City of Industry, Calif., plant an industrial role model for complying with all 2007 wastewater discharge requirements, the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County named the plant to its prestigious Good Corporate Citizen list for a fifth straight year.
July 2008
- A member of KLD's Domini 400 Social Index fund for 13 years, Sonoco was added to the KLD Catholic Values 400 Index, KLD Broad Market Social Index and KLD Dividend Achievers Social Index in 2007. In July, the Company was also added to three new KLD index funds: the KLD Mid-Cap Social Index, KLD Large-Mid Cap Social Index and KLD Small-Mid Cap Social Index. Companies selected for inclusion on KLD index funds must meet specific environmental, social and governance standards.
May 2008
- The Coca-Cola Company presented Sonoco with its 2007 Partners in the Promise Award for its support of Coca-Cola’s second-tier diversity initiative.
- Customer British Petroleum received Advance Auto Parts’ 2007 Grand Vendor Award for the three-level, cost-effective Castrol GTX motor oil Sonopop display system created by Sonoco CorrFlex, Sonoco’s point-of-purchase display unit.
- Sonoco moved to 550 on the 2007 Fortune 500 List, up from 563 in 2006 as a result of 10.5 percent year-over-year sales growth.
April 2008
- Philip Morris presented Sonoco’s Keating Gravure with its Supplier of the Year for Excellence in Innovation Award. Calling Sonoco one of its top two most innovative suppliers, Philip Morris recognized Sonoco for cutting-edge product development through 2007. Sonoco Trident also played a critical role in helping this customer improve product quality and reduce time to market.
- Sonoco's work on the labels for 20-ounce bottles of Boeing 787 Dreamliner Premiere Water received an award in the Flexographic Technical Association's 2008 Excellence in Flexography Awards Competition.
- For reducing accidents and improving safety statistics, Sonoco Recycling was honored by the National Private Truck Council with a second place prize in the category of local operation, large fleet, in the council's 2008 Fleet Safety Award Program.
- Sonoco CorrFlex won 11 Outstanding Merchandising Awards (OMA) for designing innovative temporary, semipermanent and permanent displays at the 50th Annual Point of Purchase Advertising International (POPAI) design competition held in Chicago.
- At its annual Mercury Awards banquet, the South Carolina chapter of the Public Relations Society of America recognized Sonoco’s 2006 annual report with a Silver Wing Award. Sonoco’s employee safety campaign, Will Today Be the Day?, received a Mercury Award of Merit.
March 2008
- In its 2008 Achievement Awards, the Flexible Packaging Association presented Sonoco's new, peelable Ultrapeel convenience closure, designed especially for heat-and-eat foods, with a Gold Award.
- In its March 17 issue, Fortune magazine listed Sonoco as its sixth most admired company in the packaging, containers industry for the second consecutive year.
- Eastman Chemical Company, based in Kingsport, Tenn., presented the company's Newport, Tenn., industrial products facility with the coveted 2007 Eastman Supplier Excellence Award, which signifies consistent performance in furnishing Eastman with high-quality materials and services and working on Eastman's behalf to improve its efficiency and competitiveness.
- Sonoco Recycling's Columbia, S.C., U.S. facility was recognized as a City of Columbia Green Business member for installing energy-saving light bulbs, composting, and minimizing truck idling while providing recycling service to 10 South Carolina counties.
January 2008
- CRO (Corporate Responsibility Officer)
magazine named Sonoco one of the 10 Best Corporate Citizens in the Paper sector in 2007.
