Over the years, Sonoco has been recognized for our environmental efforts. While we consider responsible packaging a natural part of doing business, it is nice to be noticed. Here is a sampling of recent awards:
Company recognition The Sanitation Board of Los Angeles County, Calif., included Sonoco's City of Industry plant on its list of Good Corporate Citizens for the fourth straight year, calling the facility an industrial role model for compliance with all wastewater discharge requirements.
South Carolina Excellence in Workplace Diversity award, presented by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce.
Named to North America's Top 20 Companies for Leaders list by Hewitt Associates, in partnership with the RBL Group and Fortune magazine.
Partners in the Promise Supplier Diversity award at Coca-Cola.
Listed on KDL Indexes' Domini 400 Social Index.
Named one of CRO's 10 Best in the Paper Sector in 2007 (Corporate Responsibility Officer magazine).
Buyer of the year award from the Carolinas Minority Supplier Development Council.
Recycling recognition The Lexington County, S.C., Solid Waste Management program recognized Sonoco's Columbia, S.C., recycling facility for its effective recycling programs in four local schools that have diverted waste from the landfill and saved the schools thousands of dollars in disposal costs.
The S.C. Wildlife Federation presented Sonoco's education specialist at the Columbia, S.C., U.S., recycling facility with its 2006 Conservation Communication Award for work in promoting conservation in South Carolina.
BS 7750 designation This honor was conferred on Sonoco Europe's Coleford, England, U.K., converting operation in 1996 by the British House of Parliament, for meeting stringent certification requirements. The BS 7750 is equivalent to the ISO 1400 environment management system standard.
United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 33/50 program award Awarded to Sonoco based on the company's participation in this voluntary partnership to cut industrial toxic chemical emissions in half over a seven-year period. In just three years, Sonoco successfully reduced emissions by 85%.
