Back to sustainability.
Sonoco has a deep commitment to the communities where it operates. Through its contribution arm, the Sonoco Foundation, Sonoco invests approximately one percent of its consolidated pretax income in education, health and welfare, the arts and the environment in communities where it has manufacturing or sales locations.

The University of South Carolina (Moore School of Business), Clemson University, Queens College of Business and Coker College, a liberal arts college in Hartsville, are among the higher education institutions that benefit from Sonoco’s support. The company is also a major supporter of the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics, a residential school, based in Hartsville, for the state’s most academically talented high school students. Sonoco provides four-year scholarships to 10 children of its U.S. employees; and two one-year scholarships to Clemson University’s Packaging Science Department; all participating institutions of the S.C. Independent Colleges and University Foundation and the United Negro College Fund, as well as the local high school’s academic booster clubs (Hartsville High and Mayo Magnet). Sonoco also encourages employees to support their colleges and universities by matching their financial gifts.

In 2007, Sonoco donated $2.5-million to Clemson University in South Carolina to create the Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics. The institute will promote consumer and environmentally superior packaging design development, printing-imaging technologies and printing-packaging systems to enhance the reusability, traceability and sustainability of paperboard, film and corrugated paperboard packages.

Additionally, committed to being a catalyst for change in the corporate world and society, Sonoco provides financial support to the CEO-driven Forum for Corporate Conscience. Sonoco President and CEO, Harris E. DeLoach Jr. sits on the Forum’s board of advisors.
