Over the last several years, Sonoco has made education a top priority. Through the Sonoco Foundation, the company provides needed school supplies and its employees volunteer time to every public school in the company’s hometown of Hartsville. As an example, Sonoco worked with the Darlington County School System to launch a mentoring program in which about 30 employees volunteer as mentors in Hartsville’s public elementary schools during business hours. Sonoco is also a major supporter of the Junior Achievement program in the school system and supports the Darlington County Library System.
Sonoco worked with Hartsville High School to successfully introduce the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program. This makes the local high school one of 2,200 in the world to offer this prestigious diploma. The IB diploma program is a two-year program for high school juniors and seniors. A broadly based curriculum incorporates international standards and a variety of assessment tools. Learn more about the IB program at Hartsville High School.
In 2009, the Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics opened at Clemson University. This one-of-a-kind program combines numerous disciplines to study packaging methodology. The institute will promote consumer and environmentally superior packaging design development, printing-imaging technologies and printing-packaging systems to enhance the reusability, traceability and sustainability of paperboard, film and corrugated paperboard packages. Read more and watch a video about the Institute.
Sonoco employees around the world also personally participate in and support hundreds of industry, professional, health and community organizations. As an example, many employees give generously to United Way, participate in education and mentoring programs in local schools and provide support during the holidays for low-income families by purchasing clothing and gifts. |
