Film Cores

General Film Cores

Sonoco film cores are designed to specifically manage the stresses and pressures experienced during winding, handling, storage, and unwinding of various film types. Depending on the film product, different core properties are required to provide efficient winding and contribute to a good roll structure. One of the biggest issues for the film industry is core crushing. When this occurs it causes machine downtime for you, the film produce (when a core gets stuck on a mandrel), and adds waste and cost to your customer (core crushes during storage or transportation). In order to avoid these issues, you need to use reliable, durable and cost effective cores. Sonoco provides the leading cores in the industry which use the latest testing technologies, such as radial crush, to ensure that you are provided with the optimal core for your needs.

High Performance Film Cores

QS Series

The Sonoco's QS Series of high performance film cores are engineered to meet the growing demands of packaging highly sensitive films and foils.

These cores are designed to deliver maximum dimensional stability, straightness, and smoothness. When these characteristics are not properly optimised for your specifications, the risk of surface defects, wrinkles, and deformations increases.

High performance film cores are specified and tested to reduce these risks during film production and transportation. Every core is measured for roughness, smoothness, moisture content, straightness, and outside diameter (OD), ensuring your high-value product is protected during winding, transportation, and unwinding while maximising productivity and reducing overall costs.

Benefits

  • Increased film yields
  • Reduced set-up times
  • Decreased film wastage caused by defects
  • Protection of high-value film

Agricultural Film

Sonoco Dricore+™ is water-resistant paper core for the agricultural film industry. Sonoco has worked closely with agricultural film producers to develop a more environmentally friendly version to better withstand the elements. Made from 100% recycled fibres, this all-cardboard innovation withstands rigorous testing without compromising performance.

Benefits for film producers:

  • Eliminate vibrations caused by plastic cores converting to 100% recycled fibre Dricore+ cores and benefit from higher line speeds and production efficiency.
  • Branding options that meet your company requirements.
  • Save when switching from plastic to cost-effective paper cores.
  • Tailor-made core dimensions, tolerances and strength properties to fit your process demands with Sonoco's radial technology.

Benefits for end users:

  • Superior stability and product integrity even after rain exposure.
  • Support of environmental goals with cores made from 100% recycled paperboard.
  • Ability to repulp and fully recycle a 100% paper product.

Cores designed using radial crush technology allow producers to reduce costs and increase productivity.

Sonoco designed the Radial Crush testing method to simulate the deformations occurring when elastic materials are wound on a core.

When winding tension is applied to elastic material, it elongates and, due to its memory effect, attempts to return to its original state. This creates uniform radial pressure around the core surface.

In response, the core reduces its inside and outside diameter while its length increases. Core strength has traditionally been measured using the Flat Crush method, but this test produces deformations that differ from those caused by radial pressure and does not accurately simulate real winding conditions for film or textiles.

Sonoco’s Radial Crush technology addresses this limitation by measuring core performance under conditions that better reflect actual use in the film and textile industries.
