Plastic Winding Cores

Benefits of Sonoco Plastic Cores

The longstanding expertise of Sonoco Plastics allows us to produce cores to tight tolerances, with precise roundness and straightness that support consistent winding performance.

Our cores are available in various dimensions and plastic materials, including PE, PP, PS and ABS to deliver the mechanical characteristics required, from rigid structures to high-impact performance. These solutions are supported through contract manufacturing capabilities designed to meet demanding production requirements.

Plastic Film Winding Cores for Today’s High Winding Speeds

Our customers in window film, polyvinyl butyral (PVB) safety glass film, paint protection film, geomembrane film, flexible film, medical-grade and electronics films rely on Sonoco plastic cores and tubes for their strength, durability and dimensional consistency.

Our high-performance plastic cores feature a range of surface qualities and characteristics engineered to minimise surface marking and improve winding and unwinding performance. As winding speeds increase, our expertly designed cores dissipate radial pressures, protect internal diameter integrity and reduce growth in core length. Delivered through industrial contract manufacturing, these capabilities help improve production efficiency and reduce costs associated with waste. By maintaining dimensional stability at higher winding speeds, our plastic winding cores help reduce defects and protect product quality.

Certifications Supporting Plastic Winding Cores

Plastic winding cores from Sonoco are produced within operations that meet internationally recognised quality, environmental, safety and energy management standards. These certifications support consistent performance, process control and reliable supply across demanding applications.

  • ISO 9001 – Quality management
  • ISO 14001 – Environmental management
  • ISO 45001 – Occupational health and safety
  • ISO 50001 – Energy management

Cigarette and Fine Paper Cores

As a trusted paper core manufacturer, Sonoco Plastics produces high-precision cores for cigarette and fine paper applications where consistency is critical. Our fine paper and cigarette cores are engineered to support efficient winding, reduce scrap and protect product quality throughout production.

Sonoco Plastics’ longstanding expertise allows us to manufacture paper cores to exceptionally tight tolerances, supporting consistent width control and stable winding performance. This precision helps improve process efficiency and reduces waste in high-speed, high-volume production environments.

HIPRO Cores

HIPRO cores are produced in accordance with the High Productive Organisation standards implemented by Philip Morris. Featuring a stacking device and a machined take-over slot, these cores deliver outstanding dimensional accuracy and surface flatness, supporting reliable handling and repeatable performance.

Plastic Endwalls and Side Shields

Plastic endwalls play a critical role in protecting reels during handling, storage and transport. Sonoco Plastic endwalls and side shields support secure load stability across a wide range of industrial applications and are designed for durability and reuse.

For optimised storage and safe transport of your reels, Sonoco Plastics developed plastic endwalls as a robust alternative to traditional solutions. These features help reduce product damage while improving handling efficiency across repeated transport cycles.

  • High reusability
  • Easy to handle
  • Suitable for various standard winding core inner diameters
  • Anti-slip structure
  • Non-stackable versions from 121.5 mm up to 1,100 mm in width
  • Stackable versions from 310 mm up to 880 mm in width
  • Special-designed “light” versions for smaller roll weights

Purpose-built securing clips can be screwed directly onto pallets, providing additional transport safety and load stability.

Plastic Plugs and Bungs

Plastic plugs from Sonoco Plastics are designed to support secure handling, storage and transport across a wide range of industrial applications. Available in multiple shapes and sizes, our plugs and bungs, core holders and plastic adapters offer flexible solutions for varying operational requirements.

Other Options by Market

Sonoco plastic winding cores are engineered to meet the specific performance, dimensional and material requirements of different markets and applications.

Film Market

For packaging film, as well as window film, PVB and other technical films, precision and dimensional stability are critical. Produced by injection moulding to lengths of up to 2,265 mm, these cores are globally unique and set a high standard for roundness and straightness.

Our high-quality extruded cores can also be supplied in nearly any length. Cores are available in ABS, ABS/SAN, PS, HIPS, PE and PP, with standard sizes of 3” and 6”.

Tape Market

For wound materials in narrow widths, such as tapes, we manufacture highly precise injection-moulded plastic winding cores. Using a specialised production process, we set the standard for surface flatness and tight tolerances.

These characteristics are essential in tape applications, where even minor dimensional variation can affect winding quality, roll integrity and downstream converting processes.

Paper Market

We have developed a unique adaptor core specifically for the paper production and converting industry. By combining high strength with reduced weight compared to standard paperboard cores, customers can achieve more than 200 reuse cycles, leading to significant cost savings.
