Sonoco's Tudela facility, located in Navarra, is pleased to accept a grant in the amount of €353,133.40 to aid in the replacement of several energy consuming elements in the vacuum production process, specifically the six liquid ring vacuum pumps, as well as twin water supply pumps for the liquid rings. In addition, a turbo blower has been installed, enabling a reliable and adjustable vacuum supply for the entire facility. This upgrade is expected to achieve significant energy savings, in line with Sonoco's commitment to sustainability.
The Tudela, (Navarra), Spain facility was founded in 1952 and sits next to the Ebro River. Initially, the facility produced pulp to supply cardboard manufacturers. In 1958, the first paper machine was installed and gradually, the raw material was changed from straw to recycled paper. In 1961, the Tudela mill began focusing on the tubes, cones, and cores market. In 1989, a transformation of the stock preparation area and main machine began to improve production capacity and paper characteristics to compete with other European manufacturers. Sonoco acquired the facility in 2019, when a major renovation of the drying section was achieved, improving capacity, efficiency and enabling Tudela to reach today's current production capacity of 65,000 tons of 100% post-consumer recycled paper. Customers transform this paper into tubes, cones, laminated sheets, die-cut sheets, corner protectors for packaging, and pallet dividers, among many other applications. Today, the facility manufactures a wide range of products of up to twelve different paper qualities for the industrial tube market.
