Facility overview
Sonoco’s Chatham, New York plant handles full-service contract injection molding from 80 to 900 ton presses, with shot sizes from 3 to 550 ounces. Robotic automation, an on-site tool maintenance shop, and dedicated project engineers keep your program on one site from first article through full production. Capabilities
The Union plant covers molding, extrusion, and finishing in one location:
Injection molding: 120 to 460 ton presses with shot sizes from 10 to 76 ounces.
- Precision extrusion: tight-tolerance round extrusion from 1 to 8 inches outside diameter, lengths up to 272 inches, with length tolerances from ±0.031 to ±0.125 inches.
- Engineering and DFM: 3D design, finite element analysis, mold flow analysis, mold sourcing from prototype through Class 101 tooling, and CPK studies.
- Post-molding and secondary services: inline and offline cutting, knurling, chamfering, tape application, and notching, plus in-house knurling tool and die manufacturing.
- White room molding: high-cleanliness production, including battery film manufacturing.

The Union plant runs commodity resins, including polystyrene and reprocessed polystyrene, ABS and reprocessed ABS, SAN, HDPE and reprocessed HDPE, polyethylene, polypropylene and reprocessed polypropylene, and talc-filled polypropylene.
