Sonoco Honored With Awards for Outstanding Merchandising Achievement for work with Allegra, InComm, Rolaids, Sam’s Club
Sonoco Display and Packaging won four honors at the Point of Purchase Advertising International’s (POPAI) 58th Outstanding Merchandising Achievement (OMA) Awards competition. The OMA competition honors the most innovative and effective in-store displays, which are recognized for lifting sales and making products memorable and enticing to shoppers. Sonoco's four OMA awards included:
- Gold award, temporary division, drug store retailer category – Chattem, Inc. Allegra® | Nasacort® Allergy Relief Tree
- Silver award, semi-permanent division, drug store retailer category – InComm Inc. | Rite Aid 2015 Holiday Fireplace Floorstand

FPA Award, PAC Global Leadership GOLD Award for Daisy
Sonoco’s flexible packaging division has been recognized with a Gold Achievement Award from the Flexible Packaging Association and a 2016 PAC Global Leadership GOLD Award for Packaging Innovation for its high-performance film laminate contributions to the Daisy Sour Cream squeezable pouch, which was developed in collaboration with Daisy Brand, Aptar (dispensing closure & fitment) and Continuum (innovation design).
The innovative 14-oz. Daisy Squeeze package is an inverted, wedge-shaped pouch with a flip-top dispensing closure featuring a silicone dispensing valve and a tamper-evident pull ring. It provides an easy-to-use, easy-to-dispense, mess-free, recloseable package. The proprietary pouch design was introduced in February 2015 and is currently available nationwide. Unilever works with Sonoco and others to achieve zero-waste-to-landfill
In 2015, Unilever reached a significant milestone of sending zero non-hazardous waste to landfill across all global factories. Believed to be a first at this scale, more than 240 industrial sites in 67 countries making products for brands such as Magnum, Knorr, Dove and Domestos have now eliminated landfill waste. Unilever included Sonoco in its key collaborators in this effort, saying: “Sonoco is one of Unilever's key suppliers for bottles and provides a waste management service in North America. The relationship between the two companies includes exchanging best practices, such as waste avoidance and treatment methods for personal care, ice cream and spreads manufacturing sites, spanning different countries. The partnership means that waste is pushed up the hierarchy rather than converting waste to energy. Sonoco is also providing Unilever with innovation by providing reusable packaging for the Country Crock brand in the US.” Read more.
Cascades Sonoco introduces recyclable, repulpable and compostable take-out containers
After three years of rigorous product development and field trial work, Cascades Sonoco, a joint venture of Sonoco and Cascades (a leader in the recovery and manufacturing of green packaging and tissue products), has introduced a water-based barrier coating for folding carton to make food take-out containers. Incorporating this new FlexSHIELD™ Barrier Coating makes the take-out box compostable when applied to recycled paperboard, without compromising critical barrier performance. This innovation comes at a time when many cities are banning styrofoam, and the demand for paper-based take-out containers is increasing.
