    Innovation + Branding + Packaging = Impact

No doubt, in today's competitive environment, all food companies need to innovate from a product development standpoint, especially if a product is in a metal can in the center of the store.

This requires a brand new look at the consumer, the product portfolio, how products are produced, ingredients, the supply chain, brand persona, and packaging. At Sonoco, our own insights group has been tracking purchasing trends as we work with consumers to gain a better understanding of what they are looking for generally in food products from food brands, and what they are looking for more specifically in terms of packaging. The insights we gather inform the work we do to develop packaging that can help reposition existing brands or introduce new ones, and help deliver the messages and psychological satisfaction shoppers are seeking. Our work developing innovative new packaging has been driven by the four primary factors that seem to be driving consumers—a search for trust, transparency, freshness and natural ingredients.

The question then becomes, what can packaging do to help deliver on these purchasing cues?

Our TruVue Plastic Can, seems to be tapping into the desires of today’s shopper and is creating an opportunity to revitalize and reposition a wide range of products found in the traditional metal can.

Merchandising Impact

With more than 47,000 products competing for attention in the average supermarket, standing out from the crowd is increasingly important. This is especially true for processed and shelf-stable foods like soups, sauces, fruits and vegetables and even wet pet foods – products traditionally sold in a metal can in the center of the store, an area which is losing share to fresh products found on the perimeter.

The unique nature of TruVue creates multiple placement opportunities around the store, including high-traffic areas like the perimeter. Today's shopper has clearly drawn a line in the supermarket aisle. They want trust and transparency from brands, and they are looking for fresh and natural products from these same brands. Delivering on these demands and communicating these purchasing cues requires changes in ingredients, product development, manufacturing and marketing, as well as changes in packaging.

The battleground where this war is being waged can be found primarily in the center of the store. Not only is the competition in this landscape fierce when it comes to attracting attention; standing out in an increasingly crowded visual cacophony, but the center of the store itself is in a battle with the perimeter for share of wallet.

The challenge becomes, how to make the products found in the center of the store, and therefore, the center of the store itself, relevant and rewarding for shoppers and retailers again? Recent research suggests this is no small feat.

Because the TruVue Can delivers the freshness cues from the perimeter to the center of the store, combined with a more premium look and feel, it makes an ideal choice for more premium products. The physical attributes of the can, support the brand image being conveyed about the product inside. This also opens up opportunities for expanded shelf-space, more portfolio SKU’s and interesting merchandising techniques on shelf such as color-blocking. TruVue creates an opportunity to breathe new life into a legacy product, or serve as the optimum packaging choice for a new product introduction that requires maximum impact and trial out of the gate.

It's no secret what shoppers are looking for in their food choices is changing. The movement toward, and growth of, organic and all-natural products is increasing. "Processed foods" are under attack from consumers and the media.

There is a strong desire for fresh, wholesome, natural products with fewer preservatives and more natural ingredients. Shoppers want simpler, clearer labels, with a shorter list of ingredients. While our TruVue Can is not a substitute for a new product formulation, it is the ideal choice for delivering an image of freshness and goodness shoppers are looking for today. The ability for consumers to see what they are buying, and the improved presentation of the product inside, helps support a brand message of fresh, natural, wholesome and hand-crafted. Research conducted comparing our TruVue Can to the traditional metal can revealed consumers believe the food packaged in TruVue will taste better and be fresher – closer to fresh in a significant way, which is a huge advantage over traditional metal cans. The TruVue can is also BPA-NI for food contact which is a very important issue for today's consumers.

    Trust & Transparency

In a recent Fortune Magazine article, CEO Denise Morrison of Campbell's pointed to the growing skepticism of large food makers that has resulted from consumers’ changing tastes as a key challenge for her industry.

Many "big food" companies have found themselves grappling with big changes in consumer behavior, in particular growing interest in fresh food and consumers much more keen to know what impact what they’re eating is having on their health and where it's from. On top of that has been a "mounting distrust of so-called Big Food, the large food companies and legacy brands on which millions of consumers have relied on for so long," Morrison said at a Consumer Analyst Group of New York meeting in New York in 2015. A recent report from the research firm Mintel showed that transparency is clearly important to consumers of all ages, scoring a 60% importance rating to those aged 18-34, and 53% to those 35 to 54. These favorability numbers are based on multiple factors, all of which ultimately point to an opportunity to drive brand differentiation and brand preference with a clear package.

The clarity delivered by TruVue helps satisfy shopper's desires for transparency—they can see the product inside, and that inspires brand trust, for which there is no substitute.

    Shelf and Shopping Disruption

In a recent Nielsen survey, it was reported that the center of the store was declining in terms of total store volume growth as well as sales, while the perimeter was showing significant growth in both areas.

The TruVue Can offers an opportunity to bring traffic back to the center, helping to reinvigorate the center of the store, while also breathing new life into existing canned food brands. Our TruVue® Can is an innovative alternative to the traditional metal can that has been a mainstay packaging option for more than 200 years. The clear, retortable plastic can has the potential to revolutionize not just the canned food aisle in supermarkets, but an entire food category that has not seen significant innovation in decades and is challenged to meet the demands of a new generation of shoppers.

Recent surveys suggest shoppers see this revealing new package as significantly more unique and distinctive, which means more attention on the shelf and a greater chance for a purchase at the moment of truth. The physical properties of the can, most importantly the see-through attributes, also provide a merchandising edge allowing brands to use techniques such as color-blocking which can stop shoppers in their tracks.

  • Brand Impact

In the end it's about winning at the shelf and that means capturing attention. Isn't time your brand got a little more exposure? Whether you are a household name, a private label, or a start-up challenger brand, establishing a point of differentiation is essential. More

In the end it's about winning at the shelf and that means capturing attention. Isn't time your brand got a little more exposure? Whether you are a household name, a private label, or a start-up challenger brand, establishing a point of differentiation is essential.

The right packaging can go a long way in helping establish a unique brand identity and an authentic brand promise. Our TruVue package is built for branding. Additionally, data also shows, because of all the perceived advantages over the traditional metal can there is an opportunity for more premium pricing, which given similar production costs also means an opportunity for margin expansion.

Finally, our research says the TruVue Can is overwhelmingly preferred when compared to a metal can, 70% to 30%, making TruVue a clear winner with shoppers.

    Tough, but Clear

Without sacrificing the uniqueness of clarity, the TruVue can is designed to withstand the high temperature and high pressure environments of continuous rotary retort systems.

TruVue has been proven to perform in continuous rotary production environments at temperatures up to 265 degrees, and seamer speeds of 500 cans per minute. The TruVue can's flangeless plastic body eases challenges commonly associated with the double-seaming of flanged 2-piece plastic containers at filling and closing sites. Creating a flange is difficult with plastic due to the low tolerance for variance in production. It is difficult to maintain the precision for an acceptable flange with plastic technologies. Additionally, in high temperature environments without overpressure, the polymer will soften and the pressure that builds inside the container cause the double seam to unravel and fail. We eliminated the flange to avoid such issues. Compression strength of the straight wall can body of Sonoco TruVue allows for maintained warehousing and shipping practices among users of metal cans vs. alternative 2-piece plastic technologies.

Our 3-piece design also creates a better heat transfer rate than 2-piece plastic options. The conductivity of the metal helps reach lethality quicker which results in a shorter cook time.

In addition, the unique construction of the TruVue can provides faster heat penetration which results in a shorter retort cycle and greater strength performance throughout the supply chain, compared to competitive 2 piece plastic formats. Using two metal ends allow for good rolling action through the continuous rotary process versus a 2-piece plastic option which often fails to roll effectively. TruVue delivers a faster heat penetration in the retort process which results in better product quality.

A technical revealution

Our FUSION FreshLock Technology makes all the difference. Perhaps the greatest technical hurdle to be overcome in developing a clear plastic can that can consistently survive the demands of the continous retort process without overpressure, has been the performance issues associated with innovating in the retort world.

At Sonoco, we have developed a three-piece can with laminated steel EZO and bottom, a 5-layer extruded body and a combination seam and sealing application. When you include unique film-laminated ends, you have a high performance package unlike any other ever developed.

The benefits of these innovations extend to the consumer as well. The TruVue can is made of materials approved for microwave-ability -- and when the easy-open end is removed, there is no arcing, providing an ideal customer experience. (The brand owner must develop heating instructions.) Choose the TruVue can to reveal convenience for your busy consumers.

    Clarity & Convenience

The merchandising advantages of being able to see the product inside have been clearly established. But if achieving clarity means production failures, what's the point?

We've been able to build a multi-layer plastic body that still delivers contact clarity while also ensuring product integrity and performance, throughout the production process. In addition, we’ve been able to do this without sacrificing the convenience shoppers are used to from easy-open metal ends.

    High Performance under High Pressure

One of the main reasons we were able to develop a plastic package that could withstand the high temperatures and high pressure environments in the retort process without overpressure, was that fact we utilize a 3 piece body construction—two ends and a core, while others have adopted a 2 piece construction.

We are able to deliver excellent seal integrity when marrying the metal ends to the plastic body, eliminating blowouts failures due to deformation that can inhibit rotation and movement through the process. TruVue has been proven to withstand temperatures to 265 degrees Fahrenheit, and pressures up to 10 psi. Sonoco FreshLock sealing technology exceeds the strength performance of conventional 2-piece plastic container double seams in high temperature/pressure cook processes; allowing for use in hydrostatic and continuous rotary retort operations.

Sonoco’s can is a homopolymer polypropylene which enables it to handle much higher temperatures. This body combined with the 2 metal ends, allow the container to maintain shape with minimal deflection enabling it to withstand the pressure differentials associated with continuous cookers. As mentioned, TruVue uses a multilayer structure consisting of polypropylene & EVOH in order to achieve the high heat performance in the retort process and provide the necessary shelf-life required by customers. Our extrusion process has been proven to deliver superior performance in our adhesives and sealants business. It produces excellent layer distribution and overall thickness control, while minimizing scrap and running at high speeds. (the consistency of the layers in the extrusion process translates into better shelf life performance. Other plastic technology approaches create thin spots where barrier can be compromised.

By leveraging our patented FUSION FreshLock Technology we are able to create the high integrity seal found between the can body and the end. This new approach overcomes the issues experienced with a traditional mechanical double seam with plastic packaging. Creating a flange is difficult with plastic due to the low tolerance for variance in production. It is difficult to work within the tolerances needed for an acceptable flange. Additionally, in high temperature environments, the polymer will soften and the pressure that builds inside the container cause the double seam to unravel and fail. We eliminated the flange to avoid such issues. Our FUSION FreshLock Technology creates a bond between the PP body and the PP on the laminated steel ends.

  • Construction and Customization

Until now, the traditional seaming process involved a mechanical double seam to make the connection between the end and the can body. We are leveraging our patented FUSION FreshLock Technology to create a high integrity seam by using a unique technique to marry the ends to the can body. More

    Construction and Customization

Until now, the traditional seaming process involved a mechanical double seam to make the connection between the end and the can body. We are leveraging our patented FUSION FreshLock Technology to create a high integrity seam by using a unique technique to marry the ends to the can body.

This new approach overcomes the issues experienced with using a traditional double seam with plastic in retort environments without overpressure.

How it works: The key is in the unique design of the metal ends and the sealing process. Rather than traditional paints applied to the steel used in metal end manufacture, we laminate a polypropylene film to the steel substrate. We utilize a crimp seam that we use every day on refrigerated dough applications. This seam is surprisingly strong (input number). The can then passes through an induction sealing process to fuse the end to the can body. The seal creates a bond throughout the seam profile creating a bond with a large surface area. It has also been designed to run on current seaming equipment at current production speeds with minimal change parts required.

Our 3-piece TruVue design with 2 metal ends provides strength and shape maintenance of the plastic body throughout the retort process. Conventional 2-piece plastic container bottom deformation is difficult to manage in high pressure/temperature retort environments. The 3-piece Sonoco TruVue design, involving two metal ends, provides the plastic body with additional strength and shape maintenance throughout the retort process.

Wall thickness and can height can be customized to the customer's specific application to accommodate unique product and process conditions. We incorporate an adhesive layer to adequately bond the PP to EVOH and to form the can body. This technique has been proven commercially and eliminates potential delamination problems associated with other plastic cans.
